A CNC steady rest is an automatic support device used on CNC lathes and turning centers to support long, heavy, or slender workpieces during machining. It prevents bending, vibration, and deflection caused by cutting forces and high spindle speeds. Unlike a manual steady rest, the CNC steady rest opens, closes, and clamps automatically using hydraulic or pneumatic actuation and is controlled by the CNC program.

A CNC steady rest is mounted on the lathe bed and provides additional support to the rotating workpiece. It uses two or three hydraulic jaws/rollers that automatically move inward to clamp the workpiece at a programmed position.
